When your employees are invested in your organization\u2019s success\u2014and their own\u2014they have to build a sense of ownership in their work that provides a solid foundation for your work group.<\/p>\n

While you can work on building a sense of ownership anywhere, let\u2019s focus on the maintenance team and their needs. Your maintenance employees<\/a> need to feel like they have a stake in their work\u2014and the workflows, tools, and software they use to get that work done.<\/p>\n

Here\u2019s some advice from current MPulse customers, who\u2019ve worked to create a sense of ownership in their employees.<\/p>\n

  1. Listen.<\/strong>Rich, MPulse customer:<\/em><\/strong> \u201cYou may not be able to do everything your employees want. But you can listen and understand their concerns. I incorporate their suggestions when I can\u2014even on the little things. People want to feel like they\u2019re heard, even on small things like where the tools are kept or the names of our customized fields in MPulse.\u201d<\/li>\n
  2. Train.<\/strong>Jan, MPulse customer:<\/em><\/strong> \u201cTraining<\/a> is constant. That includes both formal training\u2014like classes and workshops, and internal training like peer mentoring in the shop. Be sure to invest in good training and let your team know they\u2019ll be getting it. It\u2019s a long-term investment.\u201d<\/li>\n
  3. Foster a positive perception of maintenance work.<\/strong>Luis, MPulse customer:<\/em><\/strong> \u201cMaintenance suffers from a perception problem, so it\u2019s our job to change that. We start in our own department by emphasizing our team\u2019s contributions, and we work hard to do the same thing with our management team. It\u2019s almost an internal PR campaign. It\u2019s particularly important to our younger\u00a0employees<\/a>\u00a0who want to feel like they\u2019re making a difference.\u201d<\/li>\n
