Recently I asked him about his secret.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s hard to find good people these days,\u201d Nick said. \u201cSo when you do, you want to make sure you don\u2019t give them a reason to leave you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nick\u2019s strategy for keeping good maintenance techs once he finds them?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy maintenance strategy? Instead, he looks for aptitude and a willingness to learn.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou can teach skills,\u201d he said. \u201cBut it\u2019s hard to work with someone who\u2019s not interested in learning.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Once he hires the right people, however, his job has just begun.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOver the years, I\u2019ve learned employees don\u2019t leave jobs, they leave managers,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s my job to help them understand the value of their contributions. I share our big picture goals. I ask for their opinions and their concerns. Cultivating a connection to our company and its mission creates a sense of pride that makes it much more than a job.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Position_Your_Employees_for_Success_with_the_Right_Tools\"><\/span>Position Your Employees for Success with the Right Tools<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Part of investing in your maintenance team is making sure they have the right tools to do their jobs. And <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mpulsesoftware.com\/computerized-maintenance-management-system\">CMMS software<\/a> is the best tool you\u2019ve got to keep your maintenance team productive and efficient.<\/p>\n<p>Over the years, Nick has watched as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mpulsesoftware.com\/maintenance-software\">CMMS software<\/a> shifted from a \u201cnice to have\u201d to a \u201cmust have\u201d in their maintenance department.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur younger employees come in assuming this type of technology is part of the job,\u201d he said. \u201cWe\u2019ve moved away from technology resistance in the older generations to the expectation that we\u2019ll keep our technology updated.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nick also believes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mpulsesoftware.com\/think-you-cant-afford-cmms-training-cant-afford-not-to\">training<\/a> is a tool. When he sends team members to off-site trainings, he has them share their experience with other team members, like an in-house apprentice program. \u201cIt takes time,\u201d Nick said. \u201cBut it pays big dividends in the long run.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nick is very aware of his team\u2019s ability to affect the financial performance of his organization.
