Yesterday I asked a new MPulse customer: \u201cJim, what\u2019s keeping you up at night?\u201d<\/p>\n

It\u2019s same question I\u2019ve asked our clients for years. Yet I\u2019m still surprised at how often I get the same answer. Most maintenance managers say almost exactly what Jim told me: \u201cSteve, I need to figure out where I start<\/em> with this new CMMS software.\u201d<\/p>\n

Jim isn\u2019t alone. Many new CMMS users feel exactly the same way. The answer I gave Jim hasn\u2019t changed much over the years either. The best way to start with a new CMMS is to follow the KISS Principle\u2014\u201ckeep it specific and simple\u201d or, more colorfully, \u201ckeep it simple, stupid.\u201d The KISS principle maintains that most systems work best if they are kept simple rather than made complicated.<\/p>\n

Now Jim is a smart guy, like most maintenance managers I\u2019ve met. But he\u2019s overwhelmed at the thought of what he needs to accomplish\u2014which is also true for a lot of maintenance managers. So how do we boil down a CMMS implementation plan to the simplest steps? Here\u2019s what I suggest.<\/p>\n
